The UV5R is unsuitable for use on amateur radio data. The squelch cuts off too slow to let audio through and the result is that it corrupts data packets. Disappointed that it will not do the job I bought it for, plus an accessory still in transit. Found it was hard to interface for data, with it destroying 3 external audio cards, quite likely by delivering too high a voltage drive to the microphone. Other major brands have never done that before. Once programmed correctly, it seems to work ok as a voice-only transceiver
